Driessen Beach Park was re-opened on March 1, 2024 with a brand-new, beach-access boardwalk. Since then, the main-gate to the park (on Bradley Beach Road) has remained un-gated both day and night. This is in contrast to before, when it was locked at night. Since an abundance of security cameras have been installed in the park, apparently locking the gate at night has become unnecessary. However, at the same time, while the local population was expecting the second entrance (a pedestrian access-gate off of Bradley Circle) to also be re-opened with the park – it has since remained closed-off.
This was a legal R/W for the public to access the park and the beach. Closing it was unlawful and is unacceptable to residents and their guests – as well as the locals. We will continue to oppose this improper action. Please stay tuned… and please contact the Town Manager (Marc Orlando) to lodge your opposition. This improper action has robbed the community of park and beach access, while dividing this historic community in-half – denying locals the freedom of movement within Chaplin. Anything they can do to make one of the few publicly-accessible neighborhoods on the island more like the “gated-plantations” that make-up most of Hilton Head!
